A Half-Century of Environmental Leadership
The Services to the Earth Award was presented to Greenpeace for more than fifty years of fearless campaigning to protect the planet. From its earliest days opposing nuclear testing, Greenpeace has evolved into one of the most influential environmental organisations in the world, with offices in more than 55 countries and millions of supporters.
From Protest to Global Policy
Founded in Vancouver in 1971, Greenpeace pioneered the use of non-violent direct action combined with scientific research and public mobilisation. Its efforts helped drive global bans on commercial whaling and toxic chemicals, advanced international treaties like the Kyoto Protocol, and reshaped how governments and corporations respond to climate change and environmental destruction.
Shaping Public Imagination and Accountability
Greenpeace’s work is not only about lobbying governments but also holding corporations to account. From exposing illegal logging to challenging plastic waste, the organisation has consistently forced industries to change by mobilising global citizen action. Its independence – refusing government and corporate funding – ensures that it remains accountable to the public alone.
Recognition of Enduring Impact
The Services to the Earth Award acknowledges Greenpeace’s unique role in combining advocacy, action, and research to ensure “the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity.” Few organisations have shaped environmental justice so profoundly or left such a lasting mark on global consciousness.
