From Banking Pioneer to Community Builder
In the early 2000s, Shabir helped open doors for ethical finance in Britain by co-founding the UK’s first Islamic bank, now Al Rayan Bank. His leadership extended internationally, supporting the establishment of Islamic finance institutions in Pakistan and Africa. Alongside this, he built the DCD Group into a multi-sector investment firm spanning real estate, venture capital, and global markets. His influence reached policy too, serving on UK government task forces that advised on ethnic minority entrepreneurship and shaped the country’s first sovereign Sukuk in 2014.
Expanding Philanthropy’s Reach
Shabir’s later work has focused on building institutions that create long-term social impact. As Chairman of The King’s Trust International, the global arm of the Prince’s Trust, he is spearheading programmes to equip young people across the world with skills, confidence, and pathways into employment. At Cambridge, he chairs the Woolf Institute, advancing interfaith dialogue and social cohesion, and previously served as Chancellor of the University of East London, where he championed widening access to higher education. His philanthropy is underpinned by a commitment to education and youth leadership, mentoring the next generation of Muslim entrepreneurs and change-makers.
A Career of Recognition and Responsibility
Honoured with a CBE in 2013 for services to business and philanthropy, Shabir also holds honorary doctorates from Warwick and Kingston universities. Yet his most enduring impact may be his ability to link capital with conscience, shaping models of enterprise that help serve the community.
The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates precisely this type of leadership: one that leaves behind institutions, opportunities, and inspiration for generations to come.
